A lowboy (low loader in England, a low-bed in western Canada and South Africa or a float in Australia) is a semi-trailer with two drops in deck height: one right after the gooseneck and one right before the wheels. The lowboy trailer is also known as a double drop trailer. The lowboy trailer allows the deck to be extremely low compared with other trailers with no drops, or a single drop. Lowboy trailers offer the ability to carry or haul taller loads that regular semi-trailers cannot pull (such as bulldozers, industrial equipment etc). Keruing or Apitong wood is the most popular hardwood used for lowboy trailer floors. It’s common for lowboy trailers to use a mixture of keruing wood and metal in their floor construction.
